ABOUT INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL OLYMPICUS ASSOCIATION
The History
In ancient Greece, during the well-known Olympic Games, other contests were held, like Medical, Theatrical or poetic contests. Medical contests were taking place in Efessos in Asia Mino. Having that in mind, during a Medical Symposium held in Thessaloniki, on 2008, we asked important Professors who participated in the Meeting, about organizing Medical Olympiads in Thessaloniki. All were very enthusiastic and offered to support and help in order to materialize this idea. Two years later, the International Medical Olympicus Association was founded and the first International Medical Olympiad was successfully organized in Thessaloniki. Thessaloniki is located in a very strategic and promising area between Asia, Africa and Europe. From Thessaloniki one can easily go to touristic and/or historic places like the first capital of Macedonian Kingdom Aiges – Vergina, the birthplace of Aristotle Stageira in Chalkidiki, the birthplace of Democritus Avdira in Xanthi, the petrified forest in Nostimo, Kastoria, the prehistoric settlement (1600 bC) of Dispilio by the lake of Kastoria and other. Olympus mountain, which is well seen from Thessaloniki, gave its name to the Olympic Games and the nearby city Olympia.
General Information
Our Association wishes to promote medical sciences at a prototype and social interest level and also to promote Hippocratic Medicine among colleagues and countries around the world. All medical specialties, technologies, pharmacology and medical equipment firms are invited to participate in every International Medical Olympiad which takes place every 2-3 years. The International Advisors Committee
A group of colleagues from foreign countries and 2 members of our Administrative Board (the president and the secretary) form our International Advisors Committee, which cooperates with us in organizing all Olympiads. This Committee meets during every Olympiad and may give advice to us at any time. You can find more about the Advisors here.
The Olympiads
Five Olympiads have been successfully organized between 2010 and 2019 in Thessaloniki, supported by the International Advisors Committee. Τhe 6th International Medical Olympiad will be held on 3-6 November 2022.
The program of the Olympiads is short, selective and aims to present important papers which improve our knowledge to medical sciences. It is our intention not to have round tables, opinion lectures or posters. Only one lecture of original content and of social interest may be presented. Three valuable major prizes are awarded for the three best original papers of social interest, from all medical sciences. More prizes and distinctions may be offered.
It is of special importance that the Olympiads include the best research and of practical interest papers which refer to all medical specialties. So, the Olympiads are unique in presenting top medical knowledge useful for all medical scientists.
The President of the Greek Republic the Ministry of Health and the Medical School of Thessaloniki offered their auspices to some of the Olympiads.
